What's New in the CBMR Bike Park This Summer

Posted on June 13, 2024

Great news for mountain bikers: the Crested Butte Mountain Resort bike park has some exciting upgrades for 2024! With new bike carriers that allow e-bikes, a new trail and a new dining option, there’s so much to explore among what’s new at the CBMR bike park this summer.

New Bike Haul System

Crested Butte is known as one of the birthplaces of mountain biking, and the sport is central to the summer experience for many of our guests and community members. That is why CBMR has made a big investment in all-new bike loaders for summer 2024 to make the bike haul process easier and more efficient than ever! Our new tray loaders can hold three bikes at once instead of two, allowing groups of three to take their bikes up the mountain at once. Once loaded, bikes rest on their tires for a smooth and straightforward ride from bottom to top.

"We are so excited to roll out this new carrier system that will make the bike haul experience a breeze,” said Steve Duke, CBMR director of mountain operations. “This technology is simpler and easier to maintain from season to season. It is easy for our teams to operate and allows guests to load their own bikes. It’s a win for everyone.”

To load their bikes, guests use the handlebars to lift their front tire into the carrier’s tray groove. Then, they place one hand on the bike seat as they roll the front tire forward into the wheel chock. The rear tire will follow. Finally, the guest loads the chair behind the bike carrier for the ride to the top, where an attendant will unload their bike and have it waiting for the ride down.

Bike loading instructions are posted at Red Lady Express, and CBMR staff are present to assist guests with questions on the loading process.

E-Bikes at CBMR

Our new bike loaders can also accommodate Class 1 e-bikes! That means that for the first time, Class 1 e-bikes are permitted on Red Lady Express and throughout the CBMR bike park. Class 1 e-bikes are classified as pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 20mph. This technology gives guests a boost if they want help riding our cross-country trails!

You can rent a Class 1 trail e-bike at the Crested Butte Rental & Demo Center: book online in advance and save.

NOTE: Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are still not permitted in the CBMR bike park. Class 2 e-bikes have a maximum speed of 20mph with a throttle assist, and Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assisted, with no throttle and a maximum assisted speed of 28mph.

NOTE: e-bikes are not permitted outside CBMR’s U.S. Forest Service permit area. Guests who are riding e-bikes must stay within the resort boundary.

New Mountain Biking Trail

While you're testing out the new bike loaders, check out our new mountain biking trail, Sharpshooter! Sharpshooter an intermediate trail that opened mid-summer 2023 and is now back for its first full summer for our guests to enjoy. Sharpshooter splits off from Downtime and leads to the base of Red Lady Express with several small and medium jumps along the way.

Our amazing trail crew has some exciting projects planned for later this summer, too. Stay tuned to our social channels for updates!
