Crested Butte #OnlyInCrestedButte

There are numerous activities and experiences that are common amongst ski resorts in the winter time: downhill skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding are each a popular option. While these options are exhilarating and great for families, the sense of adventure that we all seek can sometimes get lost in the commerciality of a resort town.

That is where Crested Butte differentiates itself. Crested Butte was founded in the late 19th century as a coal and silver mining town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Less than 12 miles away, how the crow flies, from Aspen – the world-renowned, ritzy town with high-end clothing and retail stores – Crested Butte is the last of its kind: Colorado’s Last Great Ski Town.

Visit Crested Butte and you’ll immediately feel the passionate embrace of the friendly locals, who are keener on recommending the best powder stash on the mountain as opposed to the best spa. Or they’ll support you wearing your ski boots to the bar instead of fur. The locals are one way that Crested Butte differentiates itself as a truly relaxing vacation destination, but while you’re here, be sure not to miss out on the following activities that are found only in Crested Butte.

Alternative Dinner Transportation: Fine Dining by Sleigh

Sometimes the journey is the highlight to an exploration. Set the course for a romantic evening at Uley’s Cabin, a fine dining experience with a mountain adventure as first course. On Wednesday through Sunday evenings, guests meet at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square for departure: a snow-cat driven sleigh is your steed for the evening ride. Upon arriving at the cabin, a multi-course feast will warm you almost as much as the crackling fireplace and conversation.

Winter Zipline Tours

At Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR), zipline tours are a year-round adventure. This guided tour includes five ziplines ranging in length from 120 to 400 feet and connected by suspended wooden bridges and towering platforms. Soar above your friends and family who are skiing below. CBMR Zipline Tours are one-and-a-half to two hours long and cost is $64 at the ticket window. For reservations, stop by the Adventure Center in Mountaineer Square or call (844) 295-7755. Minimum weight is 70 lbs.; maximum weight is 250 lbs.

Full Moon Parties at Ten Peaks

These parties are one-of-a-kind! Earn your turns and libations as you take a self-guided skin or snowshoe tour to the top of Ten Peaks and warm up inside the Umbrella Bar. Enjoy a delicious buffet dinner under the moonlight, including fondue, salad, soup or chili, dessert and one complimentary wine or beer. Additional beverages will be available for purchase. These popular parties sell out quick! Arrange your event tickets at the Adventure Center or by calling (844) 295-7755.

Montanya Distillers and the Dogwood Cocktail Cabin

Montanya Distillers is the preferred rum of Crested Butte Mountain Resort and their rums are handcrafted right in downtown Crested Butte. Montanya Distillers provides rum tastings and individual and group tours of its artisan rum distillery seven days a week. Learn about fermenting and distilling processes of rum and taste the locally made, award-winning rums from Montanya. If you don’t want a tour, you can still sample the rums and enjoy the artisan rum cocktails, appetizers and fun atmosphere of their location at 212 Elk Ave. All of the cocktails (or child-friendly “mocktails”) are worth trying at Montanya Distillers. The diverse menu caters to many different flavors and the daily specials are another nice way to mix it up.

For guests looking for the quintessential Crested Butte experience, The Dogwood Cocktail Cabin is located in an old miners cabin just off of Elk Avenue in downtown Crested Butte. Enjoy one of their creative cocktails which features their own house-infused liquors and simple syrups or one of their small plates as you cozy up inside the cabin. Whether you are just getting done skiing or are getting dressed up for a night out, The Dogwood feels like you are coming into a friend’s home for unique food and drink, great music and a comfortable ambiance.
