Meet Taylor Young. He’s our Skier Services Supervisor, working on the front lines with our guests to get their resort experiences started off right! Originally from Olney Maryland, Taylor arrived in the Gunnison Valley in February of 2017. He was working a regular, full time gig… doing “what you’re supposed to do” and after some time in the normal 9 to 5 world, found he was ready for a change. A little inducement from a college buddy was all it took to get Taylor headed West. By the time he finally arrived, we were in the midst of a huge winter and his mind was blown by the seemingly constant bombardment of snow and the size of the plows tasked with clearing the roads. Taylor had never been to Colorado before and the biggest mountain he’d skied was White Face near Lake Placid, NY. His mountain game was about to hit the big leagues! Taking full advantage of his new home, he grabbed his East Coast “twig skis” and waisted no time getting himself acquainted with Crested Butte’s famed extreme terrain. Trails most people only dream about now made up his back yard. (Don’t worry, he’s since upgraded to a pair of Liberty Origins that sit 106 under foot)
That first winter Taylor worked as a ticket sales agent and progressed from there to a team lead, and now Supervisor in that department. He credits his manager’s encouragement for his rise through the department. He was able to take ownership of many tasks and projects which enabled him to learn and grow by doing. He was urged to bring his valuable past experiences in construction management into the guest facing, customer service-oriented world where he currently operates. Working in both the summer and winter season, Taylor couldn’t pick just one great moment from his employment here, but said that the fact that every day is a new challenge is the best part of his job.
What’s next for this CBMR star? Taylor has an educational background in Ecological Restoration and Sustainability and hopes to one day combine that knowledge with the experience he’s gained at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. He’s noticed the sentiment in the ski industry has shifted to “Who can go green the fastest” and being a part of that change is something Taylor is passionate about. He’s studied the effects of sustainability practices in organizations large and small and knows the positive outcomes they can produce.
The biggest perk of working here at Crested Butte Mountain Resort is the mountain lifestyle that it provides. Since his arrival, Taylor has grown more on “snow and rubber” than he could have ever dreamed. Nearly three years into living in Crested Butte, he’s got his favorite spots and was kind enough to share them. In the winter, you can find Taylor lapping the Teo Bowl…. Between the cliffs and the way it gets loaded up with snow…. He could be there all day! In the summer, he enjoys the challenging and technical terrain of the Evolution Bike Park’s Avery trail. Off resort, you’ll find him riding Hartman Rocks, Doctor’s Park, or Eccher, which is, in his opinion, the most underrated and under ridden trail in the valley.
