How Crested Butte Broke the PowCam

PowCam

… And then fixed it.

Good morning fellow Buttians,

Many of you may have heard we began clearing the PowCam at 5 a.m. effective March 1, 2019, and since then we’ve been the literal talk of the town. We heard your passion for the PowCam, but more importantly we heard the reasons why clearing the PowCam at 4 p.m. is so important to our community. Therefore, we have implemented the following changes to help you get your morning PowCam fix.

The PowCam has officially been revamped. By affixing a plexiglass divider down the middle of the PowCam we have essentially created two measurement tools in one. The left side will show the snow accumulation since 5 a.m. (5 a.m. to 5 a.m.) and the right side will show your overnight total (4 p.m. to 4 p.m.; cleared daily at the end of the ski day). View the PowCam at skicb.com/powcam

We have embedded a 24 hour PowCam time lapse on skicb.com/snow; be sure to check it out!

Additionally, there is now an overnight measurement reported every morning at 5 a.m. This measurement reflects the snow that fell overnight from 4 p.m. after lifts close to 5 a.m. the next morning. This measurement can also be found at skicb.com/snow

Thank you for your PowCam passion, we love it.

New PowCam FAQ

Q. Why can’t the PowCam just go back to being cleared at 4 p.m.?

A. We still need a visual of our 5 a.m.-5 a.m. total for transparency and to match what we report for daily totals.

Q. Do I still have to do math?

A. If you consider counting the tick marks on the PowCam math, then yes.

Q. How many employees did it take to come up with this idea?

A. One, and she’s a genius.

Q. Will the new PowCam base supporting the plexiglass divider effect the overall snow total?

A. Yes, now there will be about an extra ¼ inch of padding. Consider this, “fluffin’ it.”

Q. Is this change permanent?

A. We have decided that this is the best answer for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

Q. Will the glass effect how the snow loads on either side of the platform?

A. It’s possible, but we don’t anticipate anything substantial.

Q. If it is super windy will the plexiglass block one side and harbor snow on the other?

A. Again, possible. We hope that due to the PowCam’s tree-protected location there will be little wind effect. This was also an original reason for choosing the current PowCam location.

Q. How can we ever trust that you won’t take away the PowCam again?

A. Trust us, we won’t.

Q. Will we be partnering with Slogar to provide free fried chicken on powder days?

A. It is definitely possible.
