“I came into Crested Butte and there was this beautiful rainbow coming into the valley, and it was at that moment, my very first impression of Crested Butte, that I knew this was my pot of gold.” - Jess
There is something euphoric about visiting some place new for the first time. There is a sense of adventure, excitement about not knowing what to expect along with wild anticipation.
Coming to Crested Butte for the first time is nothing less than euphoric. Some come for the first time on a ski trip, others to visit friends, and some come to Crested Butte for the first time with the intention of staying indefinitely.
No matter the reason for coming to Crested Butte for the first time, the experience is similar for everyone. You are in a car, cruising up Highway 135. Unlike many other ski resort towns in Colorado, Crested Butte is not on a major highway. In fact it’s a four hour drive from Denver. You haven’t been through a town in about 30 minutes, and all around you are mountains, pastures, and probably a few cows. You don’t know what is coming next.
You turn the corner and our incredible valley opens before you. In the far distance are the picturesque peaks of the Paradise Divide, capped with snow or beautifully green. In front is Mount Crested Butte, rising out of the valley as a single entity, as locals call it, ‘the mother rock.’
Finally you roll into town, down the historic district on Elk Avenue, by the colorful Victorian styled storefronts. You’ll drive up to the base area, or perhaps ride an art gallery on wheels (one of the free mountain shuttles, decorated by local artists). You’ll interact with locals, you’ll engage with nature. Welcome to Crested Butte.

Gail Fisk and Richard Mattas
Gail and Richard first came to Crested Butte the summer of 2013 during the Wildflower Festival. As avid hikers and after 25 years of marriage, they have explored many of the nation’s best National Parks and mountain ranges. The Rockies were the last on the list. When they came to Crested Butte, they immediately fell in love with the location, the community, and endless possibilities of hikes in the area. Gail wants to move, she says it’s inevitable that they buy something here eventually. It’s the healthy lifestyle, the clean water and fresh air.
The experience may be, as many have called it, “Love at first sight.” That’s how Kathryn Kissam remembers her first impression of Crested Butte, when she visited five years ago with her family. Whatever your reason is for visiting Crested Butte for the first time, you won’t be disappointed. You might even be inspired to extend your stay an extra week, the way Gail and Richard did the first time they visited during Crested Butte Wildflower Festival. What will your experience be like when you visit Crested Butte for the first time?
Jess had never visited Crested Butte before she moved here. It was a big journey from Alaska, after she got a job as the Human Resources Manager at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. But once she and her husband got here, everything fell into place. They worked with the Crested Butte Mountain Resort real estate team to find a house as first time home buyers. Jess still remembers driving into the valley for the first time. It was late, she was tired, but as she turned the corner, a rainbow appeared in the sky over the mountains. “I knew this was my pot of gold.”
