The Tipple House Story
Hidden away high on the forested slopes of Prospect, the Tipple House presents an extraordinary statement of what dreams, grit and local ingenuity can build here in Crested Butte. With much of it built from reclaimed materials, every part of this newly handcrafted house has its own tale to tell. First off, the Tipple's construction team traveled to the old Gold Links Mine in nearby Ohio City where they found and dismantled an antique mining bunkhouse.

 They took the structure apart piece by piece - even finding a few gold nuggets hidden behind the walls by miners - with the idea to save and re-use every last part, even down to the nails. The timeworn bunkhouse siding became the wood for the indoor walls that now grace the Tipple House. And gold-flecked rocks gathered from around the mine now surround the Tipple's dramatic facade - based on stonework designs as seen at Gold Links.

Something Old. Something New.
The Tipple House appears destined to capture the imagination and spirit of the new Crested Butte. Not simply inspired by the past, the building embraces the character of our rich mining heritage and brings it right up to date with the benefit of innovative architectural and environmental design.

There is a wildflower meadow set to bloom on the Tipple's flat garage roof and an abandoned mine-shaft hot-spring spa steaming up down below - complete with moss-covered timbers. And right on top of the whole affair, you will find the namesake "tipple" - a glassed in observatory offering 360-degree views of the surrounding ranges.

A Labor of Love 
Even by the exemplary standards of the Prospect neighborhood, the Tipple House stands apart as an epitome of green design concepts and painstaking craftsmanship. It is the result of an inspired alliance between Sunlit Architects, builder Corbin Marr and the personal passion of CBMR co-owner, Diane Mueller.

Working together right from the initial site selection, the team was determined to forge a new path to approach sustainable building design and construction on the mountain. The project partners had just collaborated the year before in creating the rustic Mueller family barn along the Upper East River Valley outside of town which was recently profiled in Colorado Homes & Lifestyles.

The Shape of Things to Come
