THE RUSH RETURNS
Wildflower Rush mountain bike classic kicks off Crested Butte’s summer season

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. – June 15 – Mt. Crested Butte’s Wildflower Rush mountain bike classic features three elements that have become synonymous with Crested Butte: mountain biking; wildflowers; and adventure. The ninth annual event, part of the Mountain States Cup race series, includes Cross Country (XC) Downhill (DH), Super-D  (SD) and Mountain Cross (4X) races highlighting Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s legendary web of winding single track and heady elevation. The Wildflower Rush returns to Crested Butte June 19 – 21, 2009 and signals the start of Crested Butte’s Fat Tire Bike Week.

This action-packed weekend kicks off on Saturday, June 21 at 8 a.m. with a traditional 10-mile Cross Country competition, punctuated by 1,800 feet of climbing on each lap. The categories are varied and plentiful, offering something for every age, ability and interest level.

New this year, Crested Butte plays host to Mountain Cross. Look for 4X racing throughout the day on Saturday, into the late afternoon/early evening. The course is currently under construction and promises spectators intense action around the base area.

The Saturday line-up also includes a free Shimano Kids Race, for children ages 10 and under. All participants receive a medal and a t-shirt, and entrants must be accompanied by a parent at day-of race site registration. Helmets are mandatory.

On Sunday, June 22, gravity rules as the Downhill and Super-D take center stage. Riders can access the Downhill course via the Silver Queen chairlift beginning 15 minutes prior to the scheduled practice start, and ending 15 minutes prior to the scheduled practice end. Practice lift tickets are $10 per day and race lift tickets are included with registration.

The Super-D combines the best of both the Downhill and Cross Country disciplines and the course will be fast and varied; the race uses a Le Mans-style start. Practice lift tickets may be purchased for $10 per day and race lift tickets are included with registration.

Alternative adventure also awaits so don’t forget the cruiser. Dale’s Pale Ale Clunker Crits feature chainless competition and creative maneuvering on a closed course. Bring the camera and a lawn chair for the ensuing entertainment.

The Wildflower Rush kicks off this year’s Created Butte Fat Tire Bike Week. The festival includes rides on legendary single track, celebration brews from Colorado-based new Belgium Brewing Co., live music and the latest gear from top manufacturers.
