Contact Your Public Officials

As a U.S. citizen you have the right to comment on decisions pertaining to public lands. Below is a list of talking points related to the Snodgrass Project as well as a list of public officials and their contact information.

Talking Points for Letters

  • The Forest Service’s decision to reject the Snodgrass proposal was made behind closed doors and shut me out of the process.
  • The Forest Service made a decision about a ski town that depends on skiing on public lands without any public involvement.
  • The Pre-NEPA process that was invented by the Forest Service is void of rules, structure, and accountability and has damaged the public’s confidence.  The Forest Service has an opportunity to restore our confidence by reversing Forest Supervisor Charlie Richmond’s decision.
  • The NEPA process is the only formal way for the public to understand the impacts of the proposed Snodgrass expansion and to make an informed decision about it.
  • Pre-NEPA violated the letter and spirit of NEPA because the GMUG National Forest used it to make a decision on major federal action without first preparing and Environmental Impact Statement and requesting public comments.
  • The Forest Service treated our community differently than it treats other communities where it has used the public NEPA process to make decisions.  The Forest Service shut us out of any decision making process.
  • There is strong public support for allowing Snodgrass into the NEPA process.  Multiple polls have repeatedly shown there is at least 80% of the valley that supports allowing Snodgrass into NEPA.
  • Hundreds of people have attended demonstrations and marches to demonstrate their support – 100 people spent an entire day to travel to Golden, CO to demonstrate outside the Forest Service Regional Headquarters; 300 people marched down Elk Avenue in Crested Butte; 250 people attended a town council meeting.
  • Over 1,400 people have joined a newly formed online group to “support the expansion of Crested Butte Mountain Resort onto Snodgrass Mountain.”
  • The City of Gunnison, the Crested Butte South Property Owners Association and the Town of Mt. Crested Butte have all written letters of support for allowing the Snodgrass proposal into the NEPA process.
  • The economy of the East River Valley is dependent on tourism and CBMR is the engine of our economy.
  • As goes skier visits at CBMR so goes the tax revenues in our towns.  Our local governments cannot continue to provide the services we need and expect if their tax revenues continue to decline.
  • The value of my property will decline if we do not have a successful economy in the valley.
