Springtime = Pedaltime

Wildflowers in Crested Butte

Springtime = Pedaltime

Springtime = Pedaltime

It’s here. The change in the seasons when winter gear, skis and boards get cleaned up and put away and the two-wheeled beauty emerges. Dust off your mountain bike, townie or road bike and experience springtime riding in the Gunnison Valley, from townie cruiser days to lung busting climbs and thrilling descents. Below is our (not even close to definitive) roundup of great rides during May, no matter what your ability or two-wheel preference.

Townie Ride:

Grab or rent a townie bike and enjoy a very low key and fun ride. The first (and least lung burning) is a cruise around town! Make a plan of fun pit stops to eat, drink and shop at and use your townie as fun and local transportation (or try to find all the bridges in town!).

Another great ride is from Crested Butte to Mt. Crested Butte for a picnic. There is a paved pathway from the end of Elk Avenue up to Mount Crested Butte. Enjoy a picnic after picking up a fresh made to order sandwich from The Store or a cup of coffee at The Coffee Lab and enjoy the quick descent back to town!

Road Bike Ride:

Road biking sometimes takes a back seat in Crested Butte, but spring is a great time to venture on some exciting road rides and put in some early-season miles. The roads are quieter, the weather is warmer and it’s a perfect time to adventure on some clear back roads. A few awesome rides are Gunnison to Crested Butte, from Almont to the Taylor Reservoir, Mt. Crested Butte to Prospect Road and up and over Kebler Pass, once it’s open for the season.

Mountain Bike Ride:

From desert riding at Hartman Rocks to the challenging Caves Loop with beautiful views to the Upper and Lower Lupine Loops, there are some amazing mountain bike adventures to be found in the spring. We always encourage anyone embarking on a mountain bike adventure to check out the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association’s Trail Report. The Trail Report will give you current trail updates, openings and closures for a majority of the trails in the north end of the valley.

Need a bike tune or rental? Several local shops are open during May to get your bike in top shape before hitting the trail or road; check out Al’s Bicycle Heaven for both!
