Crested Butte Featured Hike #6: Hike The Peak

Are you ready to embark on a hike that will give you some of the most amazing views of the Gunnison Valley and that the whole family can take part in? If so, hiking the peak of Mt. Crested Butte is the ideal hike. Once atop, you will see for miles on end with a birds eye view of Axtel, Whetstone, Red Lady, and Carbon Mountain along with others. Snap photos and sign your name at the box atop Mt. Crested Butte and feel the rush of conquering this epic hike. During lunch, our team at CBMR did the hike in about 2 hours. It was fun, entertaining and awe inspiring as we continued our ascent up Mt. Crested Butte. High fives, laughs, and stories were exchanged leaving our team with smiles and memories. Take your time, relax, and enjoy this fun and beautiful hike to the top Mt. Crested Butte!

From the base of the mountain make your way over to the Silver Queen Express lift. The Silver Queen Express lift is about a 15 minute ride to the top, with the lift closing at 2:30 pm. With this, plan accordingly as you do not want to be stuck at the top. Secondly, check the weather before you embark on this hike as afternoon thunderstorms and lightening can pop up at any moment causing the lifts to close due to weather delays.

Once you make it to the top of the Silver Queen Express lift, gather round, stretch, hydrate and get ready for a fun and enjoyable hike.

As you continue along the marked trail designated for the peak hike, take a moment to stop and be amazed at all the beautiful wildflowers just beyond your fingertips. Signs along the trail will describe the different wildflowers that you encounter giving you a deeper understanding of why our town has been crowned “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.”

From here, the trail will become a bit steeper and rockier. We recommend quality hiking boots in this section for support and comfort as you navigate your way around these rocks. The rocks are stable, but still take your time and do not rush. Keep going, you have almost made it!

Once atop, throw your hands in the air and soak in the views of the Gunnison Valley atop Mt. Crested Butte. Words do not describe how truly beautiful the top is leaving you excited to share your experience with family and friends. Personally, I could sit at the top for hours. Don’t forget to bring an energy bar or other snacks as sit and enjoy euphoric scenery.
