Thanks Snowmakers For A Historic Opening!

Snow on the mountain is such a beautiful sight!
We’re fortunate for our snowmakers who work day and night.
Since Halloween they’ve worked hard to make snow,
And they continue to make it so our trail count will grow.
It’s amazing to have such a historic beginning -
This is the earliest date Paradise Lift has been spinning!
With 5 lifts and 19 trails to enjoy with family and friends,
Get out and ski as many days you can until the season ends!
We appreciate everyone who skis and rides our great resort,

Turkey Trot

Don't miss the CB Turkey Trot

With Thanksgiving just around the corner and lifts which will soon be spinning, it's one of the best times of the year to celebrate. But for some who may not feel the same, this time of year may be dreaded and tough to handle. There have been several articles recently published about the onslaught of suicides and mental health issues apparent in mountain/ski towns, and Crested Butte has not been exempt. Although there are several organizations and professionals available in our community that can help with these issues, the folks who need the help may not be able to afford it or do not...

Opening Terrain with CBMR Ski Patrol

The beginning of the winter season is an exciting time to be at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. As the temperatures drop and the snow stacks up, there is the inevitable question of when more terrain will open up.

New terrain openings are orchestrated by an integrated team of Mountain Operations and Ski Patrol. There are two primary factors that must be approved by these on-mountain teams before additional terrain becomes open for skiing and riding.

Safety is the most important factor that goes into opening new terrain. Natural terrain features,...

Crested Butte #OnlyInCrestedButte

There are numerous activities and experiences that are common amongst ski resorts in the winter time: downhill skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding are each a popular option. While these options are exhilarating and great for families, the sense of adventure that we all seek can sometimes get lost in the commerciality of a resort town.

That is where Crested Butte differentiates itself. Crested Butte was founded in the late 19th century as a coal and silver mining town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Less than 12 miles away, how the crow flies, from Aspen – the world-renowned...

Crested Butte Opening Day Wrap Up

Opening Day Wrap Up

Our sails were snapping in the wind, the storm clouds loomed over head and pirates of all ages crowded the gangplank, waiting patiently to disembark into the snowy sea.  It was Opening Day at CBMRrrrgghhh, and it was a pirate’s delight, indeed.

The champagne and rum were flowing, our flags were flying, and treasures were stashed around the resort, for lucky mates to find.  With a storm on the horizon, the crew was a-buzz.  They say a stormy sea makes a strong sailor, so blizzards must certainly make better skiers.

The treasure hunt was a hit; the hidden gems were found at a...

Crested Butte Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 3

Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 3

As the morning light fills the base area of Mt. Crested Butte, I’m waiting for a snowmaker and a snowmobile to swing by so I can see what their crew of 27 does with their 12 hour shifts.  It’s frigid out—as in 6F, frigid.  While I sit in the cold, my breath frozen in place by the chill, I wonder what it must be like working all night in conditions like this.

Rhett pulls up, on hour 9 of his 12 hour shift that started at midnight.  For having been awake all night, working in the cold, he’s chipper and friendly—I can’t say I would be the same at that point in my shift.  But Mark...

Crested Butte Passion Within - George Sibley

Passion Within - George Sibley

“I feel sometimes like I’m just a secretary for the valley, taking notes and turning it into letters from the mountains.” – George Sibley

George Sibley, a name reminiscent of a small mining town, eked out of snow and rock and wildflowers at the end of the road.  A town, which upon George’s arrival in 1966, hadn’t yet decided if it would continue being a mining town, or evolve into a resort town.  It was a community whose mixed pot included a dash of hippies, a few ski bums, a lot of miners and perhaps some ranchers too, but at their core,...

Crested Butte Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 2

Creating Wonderland: A Snowmaking Story, Part 2

Last week, you learned that snowmaking is not your average job.  There are long, odd hours and cold temps that roll into one very short seasonal job.  The science behind snowmaking takes what happens naturally during the winter, and adds all the right factors together to create snow when and where we want it.  The people behind snowmaking and the science of the job come together to create lap after lap on the ski hill, and thousands of happy faces that come through our lift lines.
